PANORMITANUS de Tudeschis, Nicolaus (d. 1453). Lectura super V libris Decretalium , part II. Venice: Johannes de Colonia and Johannes Manthen, 1476. Volume II (of 6), royal 2° (410 x 275mm). Collation: a-f 10 . 8 g-h 10 i 6 k-y aa-gg 8 . 10 hh 10 ii-ll 8 . 292 leaves (of 294, without first and last blanks). 58 lines, double column. Type: 13:94G (text), 5:200G (headings), printed guide-letters. First 7-line initial in blue with red and dark brown penwork decoration, 3- to 6-line initials in red or blue with occasional penwork flourishes, capital strokes in red or blue. (Neat repair to outer blank corner of first leaf, a little light worming to first and last few leaves.) 18th-century citron morocco gilt, spine in seven compartments with double raised bands, olive morocco lettering-pieces in two, the others decorated with various small tools, the spaces between the double bands onlaid with decorated red morocco strips, blue patterned edges (spine darkened). Provenance : MICHAEL WODHULL (1740-1816, inscription Leigh's sale, M:Wodhull Nov: 10th 1791. Collat: & complet: , price details deleted) -- Benjamin De Forest Curtiss (book-label) -- Watertown Library, Watertown, Conn. (book-label). FIRST EDITION OF A RARE WORK; NOT IN THE BRITISH LIBRARY AND NO COPY IN AMERICA. Johannes de Colonia and Johannes Manthen began their impressive production of all parts of the Lectura in 1475, issuing each part separately and finishing two years later. No complete set of all six parts is recorded today, and the present copy had been the only part II recorded in America. It is a particularly fine Wodhull copy, with attractive rubrication and an elegant binding. H 12308; BSB-Ink T-510; Goff P-44 (recording only this copy).
