PALMER FAMILY. Collection of Durham Coal Mining related letters 1846-1850. Collection of 17 letters dated 1846-1850 relating to the export of coal & coke to France by the Marley Hill Coal & Coking Company, Durham, together with other business & banking matters. All letters were sent from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Marseille, the correspondence being between George Palmer, his son Charles Mark Palmer & James Hall Most notable of these was Charles Mark Palmer (1822-1907) who was appointed partner of Marley Hill Colliery in 1846. He also purchased iron mines in Yorkshire & erected large shipbuilding yards along the Tyne & at Jarrow that became Palmer's Shipbuilding & Iron Company Ltd. in 1865. He built the 'John Bowes', the first iron screw collier, at Jarrow. In 1868 he raised the 1st Durham Engineer Volunteers at Jarrow & was commissioned as Lieut. Col. Commandant. In 1874 Charles was elected as Liberal M.P. for North Durham & became M.P. for Jarrow in 1885 until his death in 1907. He was knighted in 1886, taking the title of 1st Baronet of Grinkle Park.
