PALESTINE -- PALESTINE POLICE FORCE AND THE ARAB REVOLT
PALESTINE -- PALESTINE POLICE FORCE AND THE ARAB REVOLT Two Reward posters issued for information leading to the arrest of two Arabs, Hamad Daoud el Judeh Zawata (Jerusalem, 4 September 1943, 380 x 250mm) and Shawki Fakhri Abdul Hadi (Jerusalem, 26 February 1944, 327 x 209mm). Text in English, Arabic and Hebrew. (Light creasefolds, a few minor marginal nicks and short tears.) [Sold with:] [ Photograph album ]. [Palestine: 1937-1938]. 278 original photographs (the majority 65 x 90mm) on 18 leaves (305 x 405mm). (A couple of photographs loose.) Original limp cloth (original stitching broken and the whole loose). Provenance : occasional manuscript notes in white identifying photographs. THE SECOND PHASE OF THE ARAB REVOLT AS SEEN THROUGH THE CAMERA OF AN UNKNOWN BRITISH POLICEMAN SERVING IN PALESTINE. A fascinating and, at times, harrowing glimpse of Palestine during the second phase of the Arab Revolt, with images taken between 1937 and 1938. The photographer is anonymous, although an image of him indicates his collar number as 359, and seems to have served mainly in Tiberias. Shots include: armoured cars, confiscated arms and contraband, petroleum pipelines on fire, destruction of crops by rebels, police dogs on the trail, 'Blowing up old city of Jaffa', 'Whippet tank demolishing house in "Tin Town" Jaffa', 'Blowing up an Arab's house at Busan' followed by an image of the destruction with the photographer's comment 'The usual. Cui bono?' In addition, there are scenes of his fellow policemen at recreation and rest, some splendid images of an Imperial Airways flying boat on the Sea of Galilee en route to Auckland, and some of joint police and army patrols with the Manchester Regiment.
