The Heroides , fictional letters by women in myth and history to their unfaithful lovers, were the most popular of Ovid's works in the Renaissance; Saint Gelais's verse translation into French, undertaken for Charles VIII, was not only enormously popular, circulating widely in manuscript and printed editions, but it was also highly influential in the development of the verse love epistle. La Vigne's Epistres are original elegiac letters based on Ovid, heightening the melodrama and overlaying Christian morality for a contemporary audience.
