OVIDIUS, Publius Naso (43 B.C.-17/18 A.D.). Epistres d'Ovide , translated by Octovien de Saint-Gelais (1466/68-1502). - ANDRÉ DE LA VIGNE. Quatre Epistres d'Ovide . Paris: Guillaume de Bossozel, 1 August 1534. 8° (158 x 100mm). Title within metalcut borderpieces, 19 woodcuts, rule-frame border to first page of De La Vigne poems [A1r]. (Light marginal soiling on o3, quire r lightly browned, marginal paper flaw in k4.) Contemporary reversed white leather over flexible pasteboard comprised of printed waste (rubbed, joints at spine foot worn with old repair); modern folding box backed with reversed leather. Provenance : J.W. Six (20th-century bookplate). A RARE EDITION, the first augmented with André de La Vigne's Quatres Epistres d'Ovide . The Heroides , fictional letters by women in myth and history to their unfaithful lovers, were the most popular of Ovid's works in the Renaissance; Saint Gelais's verse translation into French, undertaken for Charles VIII, was not only enormously popular, circulating widely in manuscript and printed editions, but it was also highly influential in the development of the verse love epistle. La Vigne's Epistres are original elegiac letters based on Ovid, heightening the melodrama and overlaying Christian morality for a contemporary audience. IN ORIGINAL CONDITION, with several deckle edges and one sheet partly unopened. Brunet IV: 290.
