small horizontal folio, half morocco, two hole binding, with watered silk free front/end papers. Includes 38 albumen photographs, mounted recto/verso, 35 measuring 7" x 9", and three measuring 2.25" x 3.25", mainly images capturing the scenery, culture, and architecture of Hawaii as well as portraits of Hawaiian royalty and natives of the islands. Several of the photos include titles printed on the negatives as well as the photographer's name J.A. Gonsalves, and some are accompanied by handwritten captions. Features portraits and pictures of the following: King Kalakaua (1836-1891), the last reigning king of Hawaii also known as the "Merrie Monarch"; Queen Lili'uokalani (1838-1917), the sister of King Kalakaua and the last monarch and only queen regnant of Hawaii; Queen Emma (1836-1885) the Queen Consort of Hawaii to King Kamahamaha IV from 1856 to 1863; a view of 'Iolani Palace, the official residence of Hawaii's last two monarchs, with the handwritten caption Palace flag raising Aug. 12th 1898; the grand Throne Room of the royal palace; a Government Building; the residence of J.B. Atherton, a financier who moved to Hawaii in 1858; the Kamehameha Museum; a landscape view of Hawaii with the caption Road to Punch Bowl; images of men standing upon a fenced-in road with the captions Road to Poli; a view of a small Hawaiian island labeled Cocoanut Island; Tourists on the Volcano Road; Volcano Road; Coconut Grove; Coconut Land; Puummoi Gulch.
