Engraved title and 55 engraved reproductions of specimens in Ortelius' private collection, each within a cartouche by Philippe Gallé. Contemporary calf gilt (rebacked, old spine laid down). Provenance : JOANNES VIVIANUS (d. 1598), patron, fellow numismatist and friend of Ortelius (presentation inscription from the author); acquired from Bruce McKittrick, 1990. FIRST EDITION. A SUPERB PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY ORTELIUS TO JOANNES VIVIANUS on the pastedown: "Joan. Vivianii 1575. Antwerpiae auctoris dono." This was the year of their celebrated trip together to Germany and the Low Countries. They visited private libraries, monuments and made additions to their own collections. Each engraving shows one of the coins in Ortelius' cabinet which he assembled during twenty years of traveling, and each is enclosed in an elaborate cartouche by Gallé. Full-page engraved portrait by Vico of the dedicatee Cosimo de Medici, woodcut head-pieces and initials, large Giolito device on title (cropped at bottom). FIRST EDITION, second issue, with the 1558 title-page (the first issue is dated 1555). Vico's work was an influential handbook on the identification and interpretation of coins and medals. Cicognara 3054 (1st issue of 1555); Mortimer Italian 532 (1st issue).
