Melissa Bay Mathis was born in Chicago and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League of New York. She worked in the children's book department of F.A.O. Schwartz in New York, where her job included reading all of the titles. Some of her clients have included Children's Television Workshop, San Francisco Zoo, the University of California, Stanford University, Peaceable Kingdom, Marcel Schurman, and many others. She has taught Children's Book Writing and Illustration at Mills College, and courses elsewhere. She now resides in Berkeley with husband Eric and daughter Kyla.
