Produced to satisfy demands of the U.S. market, Aston's V8 Volante convertible debuted in 1978, but it was not until 1986 that it became available to Vantage specification, which by this time meant around 400bhp. The Vantage Volante was released at the October, 1986 Motor Show, held at the NEC. The modified coachwork that distinguished the Vantage was inspired by a car built for the Brunei Royal Family. Along with the Vantage engine and bonnet bulge came flared wheel arches, a trunk spoiler (a feature the Volante had previously lacked) and extended front spoiler, while glassfiber extensions replaced the model's hitherto characteristic chromed sill covers. The result was a muscular, aggressive-looking car that could justifiably claim to be the world's fastest convertible. A total of 167 Vantage Volantes had been completed by the end of production in December 1989, 78 with Right Hand Drive. Of the remaining 89 Left Hand Drive vehicles, 58 (including this car) were made for and imported into the US. Of the 58 US cars, 11 were standard transmission cars (5 speed ZF transmissions). The US cars were all fitted with Weber-Morelli fuel injection so as to comply with US emission standards. Of that mere 166 Vantage Volantes built, there can be few that boast the fantastic set of attributes that this car has. An original manual Vantage car it was ordered from new in this stunning triple black livery of Cannock Black paint, with black interior and black vinyl top. It is understood to have been originally supplied to a Daimler-Benz executive in Beverly Hills, who kept the car for the next 8 years. While with this keeper, the car passed from America to Switzerland. The car was then sold to a German collector who returned it to these shores and into Florida ownership. By 2002, it had covered just 7,800 miles, and to this day through a handful of custodians that has only risen to 10,000. It remains in extremely fine order and is complete with factory set of luggage in matching black leather. Inspected and driven at the time of photography, on the road it performs beautifully and drives like a new car.
