Actual painting, approximately 9x6"; (14½x11¾" overall). Not examined outside of frame. Signed by artist, Jack Gaughan (American, 1930-85) in lower right with his initials. A preliminary painting sketch for 'Ware Hawk jacket cover; the final published book version has various differences (yet very similar and same artist). Apparently certain changes were needed, such as: background, sword in front, color effects altered, etc. An original matting signed in the margin by the artist, Jack Gaughan, and inked titled ‘Ware Hawk; plus with photocopied information from an inscribed note “Cover Sketch for…’Ware Hawk…”, loosely tipped inside plastic corner mounts on verso. Includes a copy of the first edition, cloth, pictorial jacket. Inscribed and signed by Andre Norton. Atheneum, 1983.
