General Orders No. 41, Washington, May 8, 1877, 5pp. An unusual court martial document, in which Reno -- a Major in the 7th Cavalry who gained notoriety (and infamy) as the sole surviving officer of the "Last Stand" -- is accused of sexual harrassment of a Captain's wife at Fort Abercrombie, D.T. on December 21, 1876. Reno was subsequently found guilty of all but one of the specifications in the court martial and was intially suspended from service. President Rutherford B. Hayes later amended his conviction, ordering Reno broken from rank, and suspended without pay for two years. This was the first of Reno's court martials; two years later he was again found guilty of "conduct unbecoming an officer" after a pool room brawl. This time he was dismissed from service. Ironically, Reno's conviction was finally overturned in 1967, and his body was interred along with other members of the 7th cavalry who died at Custer's "Last Stand." Condition:EXC.
