Speneri Date: 1746 Description: [2], 300 pp. With 6 folding engraved plates of diagrams. (4to) 21x17 cm (8¼x6¾"), period calf ruled in gilt, raised spine bands, morocco lettering piece. First Edition. An important collection of writings on physics, planetary motion, physical optics, matter, mechanics, and magnetism. Euler applied pure mathematics to the problems of determining the orbits of planets and comets, their perturbation, the calculations of the sun's parallax, and celestial mechanics. This is the first volume of an eventual three-volume set, the final volume published in 1751. Pages 137-68 contain the first complete printing of Tabulae astronomicae solis & lunae, "the earliest published astronomical tables incorporating perturbations deduced analytically from the inverse-square law of gravitation" - BEA, page 347; EnestrAm 80, 156; Houzeau & Lancaster 3482. Formerly in the Stockholm University Library, with rubberstamps including discard to front pastedown, no other markings. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing to spine and extremities; darkening to margins of endpapers and early leaves (including title), some minor darkening and foxing within, very good.
