Only full report of the trial of Rev. I.S. Kalloch on charge of adultery: Complete history of the affair... with accurate portraits of Kalloch and the beautiful lady in black and the lecture room of the Lechmere Author: Place: Boston Publisher: Federhen & Company Date: 1857 Description: 64 pp. With three woodcut illustrations, including on title page. 23x14 cm (9x5½"), original wrappers bound in modern quarter leather & marbled boards. Rare account of the lurid history of the "Kalloch" affair and the resulting trial which shocked the staid inhabitants of Boston. Kalloch, a native of Maine, was defended by Richard Henry Dana, Jr., author of Two Years Before the Mast. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law, notes "Isaac Smith Kalloch, accused of adultery in this prosecution, was a Baptist clergyman and was supported by the trustees of his church throughout this affair. The jury could not reach a verdict in the case, which was tried in the Massachusetts Court of Common Pleas. The trial resulted in a hung jury. The Full Report includes the judge's charge, but not the jury's final verdict. OCLC lists only internet resources, no actual copies of the book. We found no records of sale at auction. Kalloch later moved to San Francisco, continuing his calling as a Baptist misinister but still skirting the bounds of decency. He was involved in many scandals and generated bitter and vitrolic opposition. In 1879, he decided to run for mayor of San Francisco. It was not long before he came under attack from the San Francisco Chronicle's editor-in-chief, Charles de Young, who was backing another candidate. DeYoung, with the hopes of taking Kalloch out of the mayoral race, accused the minister of having an affair. Kalloch responded by accusing Charles' mother, Amelia, of running a brothel. In response, Charles DeYoung ambushed Kalloch in the streets of San Francisco and shot him twice. Kalloch survived the wounds and with the sympathy of voters was elected the 18th Mayor of San Francisco. He served from 1879 until 1881. On April 23, 1880, Kalloch's son, Isaac Milton Kalloch, entered the Chronicle building and shot and killed Charles DeYoung. After his time in office, Kalloch left San Francisco and moved to the Washington Territory. He died of diabetes in Bellingham, Washington, aged 55. Lot Amendments Condition: Contents dampstained with some browning, repair to final leaf; good in fine modern binding. Item number: 324491
