Under the hood was the optional 289ci V8 mated to a three-speed manual transmission. The exterior color, Signal Flare Red, is especially unique and was only offered on the Mustang, and only for one year. The box for the optional vinyl roof was also ticked. Only a few weeks after purchasing the car, it became an invaluable tool for the owner and his friends during the 1966 New York City Transit strike in January—each day he and five others would pile into the car and make their way into and then out of Manhattan for the duration of the 12 day strike. The reliable Ford would go on to serve as his primary car for the next 27 years. Driven only sparingly and carefully maintained, the mileage on the car is said to be original (with the odometer having turned once) at just under 126,350 miles.
