Autocar and Motor summed it up beautifully when they described the latest Ferrari Testarossa back in 1988: It's the key to the Testarossa's enduring appeal, there's nothing quite like a flat 12, either in feel or sound. It combines smoothness and refinement with diamond-hard edge, pulls harder for longer than any turbocharged rival, and possesses a generosity of character that is completely seductive. The name Ferrari has always been associated with performance and style. In October 1984, at the Paris Salon, the Testarossa created a sensation and was considered to be perhaps the ultimate GT car for road use. The name, which in English translates as 'red head', was borrowed from the Testarossa roadsters of the 1950s, famed not only for their dominant racing success but also for having red painted cylinder heads. The 1980s Testarossa was the replacement for the longstanding BB series. The twelve cylinder Boxer engine was redesigned and retained only the engine displacement of its predecessor, it was was some 20kg lighter than that of the 512 BBi and, with the new four valve head engine, performance was improved with reduction in fuel consumption, and power increased by 50bhp. With the influence from Formula One the relocation of the water and oil tanks from the nose of the car to just ahead of the engine helped tremendously. This allowed better weight distribution and more efficient cooling and increased luggage capacity in the front. The radiator grille is in fact retained partly for tradition, but also to cool the front brake discs. The Pininfarina designed body obviously owed much to the aerodynamic engineers to evolve into the stunning silhouette shape, which is unique to the Testarossa. This one owner from new example was first registered on the 1st June 1988 and supplied via Ferrari main agents H.R. Owen of Greenford in Middlesex. The service book notes that the car returned to H.R. Owen in October 1988 to receive its first 'run in' service and checkover. Unfortunately there are no further entries in the service book, perhaps due to the fact that the next recommended service interval is at 6,250 miles and if the previous MOTs are to be relied upon this figure would only have been reached in 1995 by which point usage seems to have been minimal. The odometer currently displays just 6,667 miles but unfortunately the condition of the vehicle is not how one would expect. The last tax disc expired in May 1999 and it would appear that the car has resided outdoors since. The leather interior has been 'sunbleached' and although the seat could be connolised, the dashboard top has peeled and will certainly need a retrim. Paintwork is faded in places and there is some light damage to the bodywork, primarily to the rear three-quarter panels on both sides but there are also some minor dents on the roof and the front and rear bumpers have suffered the effects of bad parking. Due to the fact that the car has not been used for such a long period, Christie's has made no attempt to run the vehicle thus mechanical condition cannot be commented upon. This low mileage, one owner Testarossa will no doubt provide a rewarding project and once recommissioned for road use it will relish use once again. Offered with the car is the attractive registration number '25 SHY' along with the Swansea V5 registration document and previous (expired) MOTs.
