Strong contender for the ‘most handsome car of the 1960s’ title, Maserati’s Ghibli debuted at the Turin Motor Show in November 1966. Styled at Ghia by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the V8-engined Ghibli rivalled the Ferrari Daytona for straight-line performance - its top speed was close to 170mph (275km/h) - while beating it for price and - arguably - looks. Even more sensational was the handsome Ghibli Spyder, launched in 1969 and the direct rival of Ferrari’s Daytona Spyder. Giugiaro’s styling for an open-top Ghibli was arguably more successful than the original coupé and is regarded as a classic of sports car design. It is a unique privilege for us to offer for sale this ‘one owner from new’ Ghibli Spyder, which has remained with the current vendor since purchased by him, aged just 22 years old, via the Naples branch of Rome based Maserati agent Sport Auto in August 1970. Factory records confirm that the car was ordered to the ultimate European specification, with 4.9 litre ‘SS’ engine, manual gearbox, power steering and factory hard top. The coachwork was attractively finished in Bianco Polo with black leather upholstery and carpets. The Spyder was driven sparingly by its young owner (“mostly when courting” comments his wife, although she does not say who!), as his growing construction business occupied most of his time and allowed him to keep four or five other cars in his garage for everyday use. This explains how, almost 35 years later, this thoroughbred sports car has covered just 19,724km and is still shod with its original tyres! We are informed that it has never been exposed to rain nor accident damaged, the hard top has never been fitted, and the soft top, leather and carpets are all original. The coachwork was repainted many years ago and the paint and chromework show signs of age, whilst the Campagnolo alloy wheels even have their factory stickers still in place. A period radio is fitted, with optional electric aerial, and the factory tools, hand book and even the key fob are all with the car. First registered in Naples (in the name of an employee), the car was re-registered in Rome when the owner moved there in 1982, and retains its old style ‘Roma’ plates. Recently checked over mechanically and without doubt the most authentic Ghibli SS Spyder we have ever come across, this is a car for the connoisseur: one owner from new, very low mileage, ultra original and to the ultimate specification (only 37 manual 4.9SS Spyders were ever built, and probably half of those were US market cars). It’s not hard to see what makes this ‘time warp’ car unique.
