Title: On the Calorific Effects of Magneto-Electricity, and on the Mechanical Value of Heat [in The Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Volume XXIII Author: Joule, James Prescott Place: London Publisher: Richard and John E. Taylor Date: 1843 Description: viii, 552 pp. One lithograph plate. (8vo) 21.5x13.5 cm (8½x5¼") old black half morocco and marbled boards. First Edition. Joule's writings appear in three parts, pages 263-276, 347-355, and 435-455. Joule demonstrated that the conversion of heat into force, and vice versa, takes place at a fixed rate. This discovery led to two conclusions: first, that heat is a form of energy; and second, that within a given system, the sum total of energy is both constant and convertible. Joule's work, along with that of Mayer and Helmholtz, was fundamental to the establishment of the principle of the conservation of energy. Also includes an account by Charles Babbage of his calculating engine projects. Dibner 158; Norman 1179; Printing & The Mind of Man 323. Lot Amendments Condition: Ex-library from several Carmelite libraries with stamps on endpapers and title page. Joints and edges rubbed; light foxing; very good. Item number: 270761
