OLDRICH BLAZICEK (1887–1953) INTERIOR OF THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION AND ST. NICHOLAS IN ŽĎÁR NAD SÁZAVOU Starting price: 180 000 CZK (6 667 EUR) Hammer price: 410 000 CZK (15 185 EUR) Description dimensions: 90 x 79,5 cm (h x w) period: 1927, Bohemia This painting superbly captures the lighting of the Baroque interior. The strong light falling on the choir and illuminating the main altar, with its rich figural decoration and paintings by Michael Willmann contrasts with the intimacy of the organ loft, choir benches and praying figures enveloped in a warmer shade. Blažíček was a master of many genres; church interiors, however, were one of his favorite. He painted church interiors in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia, as well as Ruthenia, Venice and Rome. He returned to many churches, as can be seen in his paintings of the interior of St. Vitus Cathedral. The artist also painted the church in Žďár more than once. The painter's granddaughter, art historian PhDr. Naděžda Blažíčková-Horová, considers the work on offer a masterpiece and it will be included in the artist's monograph she is preparing. The book will be published next year in commemoration of the artist's 130th birthday. Originally in Jan Masaryk collection. Expert assessment: PhDr. Blažíčková-Horová. Oil on wood, signed and dated on bottom center "O. Blažíček 1927".
