Beschreibung:

Contenant les choses memorables advenuës tant au Royaume de France qu'és Provinces estrangeres sous la domination des François, durant douze cent ans. Escrite par Bernard de Girard (...) et depuis continuee des escripts de plusieurs atheurs (...). Paris, C. Sonnius, 1627, 2 vols., (32),1098,(12); (4),866 p., both with beautiful large engr. printer's device on the title p., contemp. unif. calf, folio.
Frequent mispagination or skipping page numbers; vol. 1 a few lvs. wormholed in margins in quire NNnn; both vols. occas. sl. browned. Both vols. neatly rebacked in old style, covers chafed and corners worn; vol. 1 with old price in pen on first free endpaper: "6 gul. 6. st." Both vols. with the owner's entry "Betts 1648" in pen. We presume this is the physician John Betts (c. 1623-1695), whose library was sold at auction in London, 3 June 1695 (1040 lots). See the page about him on the website Book Owner's Online, with interesting remarks on this library, for instance: "None of Betts’s books have been identified." Also on the title pages is the owner's entry in pen of Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (1655-1716), Scottish bibliophile, globetrotter, author of political works and member of parliament, friend of the philosopher John Locke. He might have bought the present work at the Betts sale of 1695. The greater part of Fletcher's huge library (6000 books across a wide range of subjects, often bought during his travels) was sold in the 1960s. See P.J.M. Willems, Bibliotheca Fletcheriana, the extraordinary library of Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun, Reconstructed and Systematically Arranged (1999). We have a number of books with this exact owner's entry in this auction. The present very extensive work on the history of the French Kings by French historian Bernard de Girard (c. 1535-1610) was first published in 1576. Our edition is very rarely offered for sale.
