Description: Oil on Tin Portrait of Major General Augustine Prevost and a Miniature Portrait of His Wife Annette Grand, late 18th century, bust-length portrait of the general wearing a blue-faced red military jacket with gold lace and buttons and white waistcoat, mounted in a stained oak frame, ht. 13 3/4, wd. 9 3/4; miniature portrait of his wife wearing a pink dress, the back with a partial inscription "Miss [?] Grand/[?] Wife," in a brass frame, ht. 2 3/8, wd. 2 in. Note: Augustine Prevost (1723-1786) was born in Geneva, Switzerland, and was commissioned Major in the 60th Royal American Regiment January 9, 1756. He served in several northern campaigns of the French & Indian War including the Siege of Quebec in September of 1759. At the outbreak of the American Revolution, Prevost, then a colonel of the 60th, was part of the British garrison at St. Augustine, Florida. He was later made a brigadier-general and commanded British forces during the Siege of Savannah in 1779.
