Beschreibung:

Oil and charcoal on canvas Signed and dated 1928, lower right, additional production label bearing title, verso 76.2 x 114.5cm (30 x 45 1/8 in.) Unframed Executed for the London, Midland and Scottish Railways (LMS) in 1928, the present work is one of a series of views of Scotland that Wilkinson produced to promote travel to the Scottish highlands and islands during this period. It is a beautifully calm and evocative work which reflects the peace and tranquility of the view. Norman Wilkinson might be considered the father of modern railway poster design. Before his involvement with the LMS, the standard of railway artwork was variable and frequently repetitive and low quality. In enlisting Wilkinson, the LMS strove to lead the way in producing more striking poster designs to appeal to the travelling public, ushering in what has become known as the golden age of the railway poster. Wilkinson rose to the challenge not only designing large numbers of posters himself, but also proposing the revolutionary idea of approaching Royal Academy artists to design further posters. Exhibited: Olympia, London, The Advertising and Marketing Exhibition, July, 17-22, 1933 (label affixed, verso) Provenance: Property from a Private Collection Condition report disclaimer
