OGILBY, John (1600-1676, translator). [MONTANUS, Arnoldus (ca 1625-1683)]. America: being the latest, and most Accurate Description of the New World... Collected from most Authentick Authors, Augmented with later Observations, and Adorn'd with maps and Sculptures, by John Ogilby . London: Printed by the Author, 1671. 2 o (399 x 255 mm). Additional engraved allegorical title, letterpress title in red and black, 55 engraved plates comprising 6 portraits; 3 double-page views and plans; and 19 engraved maps, of which 6 double-page and 3 folding; 66 engraved illustrations in text; woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces (few small holes along folds of maps, four plates with small marginal rust-holes). (Titles lightly soiled, some creasing to last gathering, some mostly marginal pale browning.) Modern crimson half morocco, top edge gilt. Provenance : "W.E.G." (bookplate). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Ogilby intended his unacknowledged translation of Montanus's De nieuwe en Onbekeende Weereld , published in Amsterdam the same year, as the second volume in his "English Atlas" series. Ogilby's few additions included supplementary information on New England, New France, Maryland and Virginia, compiled mainly from English sources. Most of the plates were reprinted from the original Dutch plates. There were several issues of this work, and copies differ in their make up. This copy is without the Arx Carolina map, and without the Virginia map, both maps listed in the "Directions for placing the Whole-Sheet Prints," but includes the Barbados map omitted in the Directions (cf. JCB, p. 228). Borba de Moraes, p. 626; JCB (3) III, 227-8; Palau 177493; Sabin 50089; Wing O165.
