Half-title 'English Atlas, Tome the First', title in red and black, engraved frontispiece before letters bound between C4 and B1, one folding general map of Africa, 55 engraved plates of views and maps, of which 45 double page, numerous engravings throughout text, 9 leaves of letterpress tables. (Variable and mostly very light browning throughout, neat tear to one double-page plate in lower margin, small tear and very small hole to I6 affecting a few letters, paper flaw to P5.) Contemporary polished calf, covers tooled in blind with a central panel enclosing a lozenge with foliate cornerpieces, gilt spine with red morocco lettering-piece and FFF stamp at foot (joints rubbed and splitting at head and tail, headcap worn, boards and edges scuffed, corners slightly bumped). Provenance : Francis Ferrand Foljambe (binding). FIRST EDITION. As the half-title (lacking in many copies) states, this was intended to be of the first volume of Ogilby's planned 'English Atlas'. The work is one of the most authoritative 17th-century accounts on Africa published in English. The preface (dated April 28, 1670) contains Ogilby's only autobiography.
