NORTHWEST PASSAGE]. Report Relating to the Finding of a North-West Passage . [London, 1742]. 2 o (340 x 210 mm). 7 pages. (Some pale browning at edges.) Stabbed as issued; red quarter morocco folding case. FIRST EDITION of a very scarce report relating to the Dobbs-Middleton controversy. Dobbs, investing in the discovery of a Northwest Passage from Hudson's Bay, accused Capt. Christopher Middleton of concealing the findings of his 1741 expedition at the request of the Hudson's Bay Company. Dobbs, along with other merchants, petitioned the Admiralty to investigate the case. This report by the House Committee resulted from the petition, and in response to it Dobbs and Middleton wrote their many responses, a number of which are included in the Frank S. Streeter collection. The end of the report includes a deposition signed by John Rankin and Robert Wilson who sailed with Middleton aboard the Furnace . RARE: according to American Book Prices Current , no copies have sold in at least 30 years. JCB (3) III:717; Sabin 69938; Streeter sale VI:3634.
