Norman Parkinson (1913 - 1990)
Nena at the Houses of Parliament
Norman Parkinson (1913 - 1990) Nena at the Houses of Parliament gelatin silver print, printed later This is the only print in the Norman Parkinson archive and was printed later for an exhibition. Norman Parkinson Trust stamp on verso image 11½ x 11½in. (29 x 29.25cm.) sheet 16 x 12in. (40.5 x 30.25cm.) Taken for Queen Magazine, Circa 1960 'Coats to fall in love with' Health and safety issues are a relatively recent concern for photographers. Here Parkinson photographs Nena, one of the favourite models, high above the Thames. Parkinson was known for placing his models in precarious settings. He once photographed the model Carmen dell' Orifice high in the air, hanging by a stiletto on a crane in front of the old Bailey. He photographed his wife Wenda under the dramatic Howick Falls and later on the same shoot on the back of an ostrich in South Africa. He also famously photographed Appolonia on a pillar at the Crane Hotel in Barbados. Parkinson asked a lot of his models but they trusted him and knew he could come up with a spectacular result.
