NORMAN CORNISH (b.1919) PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST'S WIFE, SARAH, KNITTING Signed, oil on board 82 x 74cm. * Cornish often painted his wife carrying out tasks around the home, including the mundane trivialities of cooking, bathing the children, hanging wallpaper and sewing. His studies of Sarah knitting have a serene, almost reverential, tone and a contemplative mood that give her " a sense of sanctity". Sarah was instrumental in forcing her husband to give up his job in the coal mines at the age of 47 and take up art full time, a risky venture in the small town of Spennymoor in 1966: "Either you go and put your notice in, or I'll do it for you", she told him. Married for 63 years, Sarah Cornish is a continuing source of inspiration for her indefatigable husband as he sets up his easel to paint every day of the week: "I paint human beings. I paint their hopes and their shapes and their attitudes and the feelings I have when I look at them. The images come from the people. I am just the medium.". Exhibited: Newcastle upon Tyne, The Stone Gallery
