A TICKET TO THE IMPEACHMENT THAT WASN'T. On 24 July 1974, the Supreme Court unanimously ordered President Richard Nixon to turn over taped conversations concerning the Watergate burglary and cover-up. Days later the House Judiciary Committee recommended articles of impeachment to the full House, and on 5 August the White House released the "smoking gun" tape: Nixon's June 1972 conversation with H. R. Haldeman, ordering him to obstruct the FBI's Watergate investigation. Impeachment and conviction now a certainty, Nixon resigned on 9 August 1974--ten days before the scheduled vote.
