Photograph signed ("Richard Nixon") as President, an official press photo of the commemorative plaque marking the success of the Apollo 11 space mission, ALSO SIGNED BY THE ENTIRE APOLLO 11 CREW: Neil Armstrong ("Neil Armstrong"), Michael Collins ("Michael Collins") and Edwin E. Aldrin ("Buzz Aldrin"), n.p., 3 July 1969. 10 x 8 in., faint NASA inkstamp on verso with one paragraph description , in fine condition. "HERE MEN FROM THE PLANET EARTH FIRST SET FOOT UPON THE MOON JULY 1969, A.D. WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND" Nixon and the three Apollo 11 astronauts have each signed their names next to the facsimile signatures reproduced in the image. Amstrong and Alrdin made their historic moon-walk on 20 June 1969, two weeks prior to the release of this photo. The plaque depicts the two spheres of the earth above the signatures of the crew and President Nixon. In his memoir, Men from Earth , Aldrin relates that after being picked up by the carrier Hornet , "Neil, Mike, and I dressed in blue flying suits and went to the window, where President Nixon officially welcomed us back. Nixon had a reputation for being cold and calculating, but on this morning in the western Pacific, he actually danced a little jig when he saw us.
