Aldrich, The White House, Washington, D.C., "Thursday," 14 December 1971. 2 full pages, 4to, on White House stationery with embossed Presidential seal, small trace of old framing at top two corners. [With:] Two photographs, one with secretarial signature. AN EXTREMELY RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER OF PRESIDENT NIXON IN OFFICE: ONE OF A HANDFUL KNOWN "Dear General and Mrs. Aldrich, I want you to know how much I enjoyed staying in your delightful home. The Christmas decoration, the decor - and particularly your charming family pictures (the wedding picture especially) made me feel very much at home." "I know our visit was a great inconvenience for your family and staff -- give them my appreciation. A very happy Christmas to all of you. We are proud to have such a fine family in the service of the United States. Richard Nixon." EXTREMELY RARE. Only a handful of autograph letters of Nixon as President are known. Like most modern Chief Executives, Nixon much preferred to dictate letters to his team of secretaries. THIS IS THE ONLY NIXON LETTER AS PRESIDENT RECORDED AT AUCTION IN A QUARTER CENTURY. At Hamilton Galleries in December 1977, it brought $7,250. which at that time constituted a record for a letter of any living person.
