NIXON, Richard M. (1913-1994), President . Autograph letter signed ("Dick") to his parents Frank and Hannah Nixon, [Ottumwa, IA], 14 March [19]43. 1 page, 4to (10 15/16 x 7 3/16 in), 2 punch holes in top margin, otherwise fine. FROM THE NAVAL RESERVE BASE, NIXON NOTES "PLANES ARE OVERHEAD ALL THE TIME" An early Nixon letter written shortly before his transfer to the Pacific theater in World War II. Nixon joined the navy in June of 1942 and was quickly assigned as an aide to the executive officer at the Naval Reserve Air Base in Ottumwa, Iowa. Here he writes to his parents from base concerning the pending tax deadline: "All the dope on the Tax arrived...It was just like getting a dividend and a real help in meeting the Tax as you can imagine. I was busy up to March 15 just like old times--helping men and officers with their returns. We tried to do as much as possible in order to keep things going without too much waste of time for tax preparation." Nixon acknowledges the death of a friend and apparent business associate: "I was greatly shocked to hear about Ech Perry. He was a fine man - an asset to the community, the college, and as we all know to the firm. Whittier won't be the same without him on the street, at the games and in his office. I am working on the estate tax this week...the income tax business was so heavy that it through [sic] me off schedule." Turning to the military build-up at the base, Nixon writes: "We have a hundred students in training now--and planes are overhead all the time. The station was formally commissioned on March 11. A Regular Navy Captain comes in March 18 and there will probably be a shake up in the organization." Two months later, Nixon was transferred to the Pacific where he ultimately served in Bougainville on the Soloman Islands as commander of the South Pacific Combat Air Transport Command, service for which he received a citation. Nixon ALSs are rare. Auction records reveal that only five examples have been offered in the last twenty-five years and none were from this early period.
