includes a manuscript certificate for a free African American named Thomas Gough permitting him to travel, dated 1847, and reading in part This is to certify that we are accquainted [sic] with the [illegible] Thomas Gough and know him to be a quiet and orderly free colored Man..., 6.5" x 7.5", PLUS a three page manuscript sermon signed at end Edward Beecher (1803-1895), and dated Boston April 22, 1832, PLUS a 4pp manuscript entitled Mr. Clay on Slave Breeding, written by Wm. Jay (1798-1858) the son of John Jay and dated 1850, being an attack on the slave states in general and Henry Clay in particular, PLUS a 5 and a half page letter written by Leonard Bacon (1802-81; abolitionist) to Rev. Wm. H. Ward in New Haven, 1870 dealing with the abolition of slavery, PLUS a 6pp manuscript letter written by George H. Cook (1818-89; Professor of Chemistry at Rutgers) to Gurly in 1863 dealing with a solar compass, PLUS a 2pp manuscript letter by George Julian (1817-99; Indiana politician and abolitionist), dated 1897, PLUS a manuscript document being a bill of sale for slaves in Georgia, dated 1855, being an estate document on the sale of a negro girl named Mary, aged twelve years and a certain negro girl named Tin aged ten years..., PLUS a manuscript receipt signed Nathaniel P. Rogers (1794-1846) American abolitionist, AND an ALS on Church Missionary Society letterhead dated London 1877 written by Samuel Crowther, a rescued slave boy who became the 1st Consecrated Bishop of the Niger Territories in 1864, dated 1877 dealing with an upcoming visit and the arrangements to be made for same. Condition: Most with normal folds, some with moderate to light toning, VG- to VG+.
