NIGHTINGALE, Florence (1820-1910). Three autograph letters signed, one autograph letter, one pencil note initialled and one letter signed to Dr. John Murdoch London, 17 July [18]86 - 29 October [18]96 , on sanitary conditions in rural India, requesting up-to-date publications on the matter, on native superstitions, and commenting on the work of others in this field and in education, 'I send you six copies of Dr. Hewlett's paper on Village Sanitation in India. I look forward so much to our promised tract for the Native on his duty to his village - because there is so much ground, is there not? in a Hindoo's mind and training to stand upon teaching him his public duties, not only to his caste, but to his village', and commenting on her health, 24 pages, 8vo and 12mo (rather browned, small splits in folds, the note torn and repaired). Florence Nightingale had taken great interest in the sanitary conditions of India and the need for education to improve the general health of the population since the 1860's, and these letters give some indication of here correspondence with numerous Indian and European individuals on the subject, 'Some of these books which you have kindly sent show indeed how much could be done in instructing the people in the way you have pointed out in your "Education in India (But I should like to have a great deal more information from you)', and commenting on the work of Lady Dufferin, Lady Grant Duff and others, and stressing the need for women doctors, 'But above all the Lady Doctor should be trained to do this [educating the poor at home] & should feel it the first necessity. I think Mrs. Scharlieb did. I don't think English Men Doctors do', and hoping that some of the basic superstitions can be combatted by primary education in general. (6)
