NIEUHOFF, Jan. Legatio Batavica ad Magnum Tartarie . Amsterdam: Jacob Meurs, 1668. 2° (309 x 195mm). Additional engraved title, portrait of the author, folding map, 33 folding and 2 double-page plates, 109 engraved text-illustrations, engraved device to title, engraved and woodcut initials, woodcut tailpieces, with one loose engraved text-illustration from another work loosely inserted. (Lacking the portrait of Jean-Baptise Colbert found in some copies, occasional faint spotting, very light marginal dampstain affecting 'Ad Lectorem' leaf and portrait only, two very short tears to folding map without loss.) Slightly later, possibly early 18th-century vellum gilt, red morocco gilt lettering piece top spine, yapp edges (extremities lightly rubbed, light soiling). Provenance : 'Hafniae [i.e. Copenhagen], 1714' (ink inscription to front pastedown) -- James Heron Watson (armorial bookplate dated 1930). A FRESH, CRISP COPY OF THE FIRST LATIN EDITION, containing the plate of 'Paolinx' not found in the first Dutch or French editions of 1665. Cordier Sinica 2346-7; Löwendahl I, 137.
