Catalogue Essay “These pictures grew out of my curiosity about and admiration for this band of beautiful, strong women, who first let me into their lives, then allowed me to try making one picture, then joined me in a tradition, an annual rite of passage.” -Nicholas Nixon In 1975, Nicholas Nixon said “just give me what you’ve got” and turned his lens on his wife Bebe and her three sisters, Mimi, Laurie, and Heather—the four Brown Sisters. First taken during a weekend visit to Bebe’s parent’s home in Connecticut, the annual series continues today, collectively showing an intimate family portrait, the bonds of sisterhood, and a visual marker for the passage of time. The Selected Images on offer represent the first 5 portraits from this ongoing body of work. Complete sets of the portraits are in the collections of The National Gallery of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; George Eastman House, Rochester; MAPFRE, Madrid; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others.
