The gala opened with Glinka's Life of the Tsar -- one of the first Russian operas to be known outside of Russia, and the first native opera to secure a permanent place in the repertoire. The celebrations then continued with Marius Petipa's ballet The Pearl , which proved to be the greater success on the bill. Petipa remains one of Ballet's most influential Master.
