NICHOLAS II (1868-1918), Czar of Russia . Cabinet photograph signed ("Nicholas," with paraph and "Balmoral 1896"), by Levitsky of St. Petersburg (backstamp in gold ink), Balmoral Castle (Scotland), 1896.
NICHOLAS II (1868-1918), Czar of Russia . Cabinet photograph signed ("Nicholas," with paraph and "Balmoral 1896"), by Levitsky of St. Petersburg (backstamp in gold ink), Balmoral Castle (Scotland), 1896. 6 3/8 x 4 1/8 in., including mount, minor soiling at extreme edges . In an early decorative leather-covered frame with brass pediment and decorations (a bit worn). Nicholas's bold inscription and signature in lower portion of image. THE LAST CZAR OF RUSSIA IN FULL REGALIA, DURING HIS 1896 VISIT TO QUEEN VICTORIA. Signed at Balmoral Castle, the Victoria's royal retreat in Scotland. A fine head-and-shoulders oval image of the regent, in his military garb: epaulets, sash, gold braid and decorations. In 1896 the Czar and Czarita (Alexandra Fyodorovna), visited Queen Victoria, Alexandra's grandmother. Nicholas and Alexandra attended a naval review at Aberdeen, then joined the Queen, many family members and a few important officials at the castle in the Highlands for a 10-day stay. This strong image of the young Czar was inscribed and signed during that brief stay.
