Autograph letter signed to Josiah Jones, Olney, 22 January 1766, a letter of spiritual exhortation, 'Fear not therefore, be strong in the Lord & in the power of his might', four pages, 4to , integral address panel (seal tear affecting three words). John Newton was the joint author with William Cowper of the Olney Hymns (1779). He had passed his early years at sea, before the development of a strong evangelical religious experience led to ordination. He took the curacy of Olney, where, in the year after the present letter, Cowper and Mrs Unwin settled; he was later an influential preacher as incumbent of St Mary Woolnoth in London.
