[NEWTON, Isaac] Principes mathématiques de la philosophie naturelle. Par feue Madame la marquise du Chastellet. Paris, Desaint & Saillant, Lambert, 2 vol. 4to: [4]-xxxix-[5]-[4]-180-297-[pp.; pl. (some foxing, sm. wormholes and sm. tear in inner margins of vol. II). Contemp. marbled calf, gilt orn. spines with raised bands, red edges (joints of vol. I split, occ. small def.). First French edition, second issue, by Gabrielle-Émilie Du Châtelet of Newton's "foundation book on dynamics and gravitation. Probably the most influential scientific publication of the 17th century" (Horblit). An edition, not definitive, was already published in Illustrated with fold. plates. This translation, and the commentary, are the most accomplished work of the French woman mathematician and physicist (1706-1749). With a preface written by Voltaire, companion for years of Du Châtelet, who encouraged her scientific research. Ref. Honeyman coll., n° - Bengesco - Cp. Horblit (ed.). - Not in Macclesfield. Prov.
