Promotional booklet for the new Mackay housing development in Walnut Creek, with designs for and drawings of six models of homes, each under $30,000, as indicated by the prices inked under the descriptions. With businesss card of Mackay Homes representative Leland Blanchard pinned to front wrpper, next to penciled date Nov. 1964. There are no records in OCLC/WorldCat. During the first half of the 20th century, most of the area had become Walnut orchards. In 1961 and 1962, housing development planning for the area was just getting started. Several developers, including Middlefield, MacKay and Hofman, were the first to approach the City of Walnut Creek to create the “Woodlands”. Once started the Woodlands area changed forever from basically farmland and walnut groves into an urban community. John Calder Mackay was an American post-war real estate developer, best known for his modernist tract homes built by the company he co-founded, Mackay Homes. Mackay homes in the Modernist tract style are examples of Modernist architecture that has come to be known as "California Modern". These homes typically feature glass walls, post-and-beam construction, enclosed patios and open floor plans in a style indebted to Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe.
