NEWELL CONVERS WYETH (american 1882-1945) "A CAVALIER" (UNTITLED) Signed 'NC Wyeth' upper left; also with remnant of a label inscribed '19' bottom right, oil on canvas 30 x 20 in. (76.1 x 50.7cm) provenance: The Artist. By descent in the family. The Collection of Mr. and Mrs. George Twigg, III, Maine. literature: Christine B. Podmaniczky, N.C. Wyeth: Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings, London, 2008, vol. 1, p. 106, no. I.18 (860), (illustrated). note: According to the aforementioned Catalogue Raisonné, the present painting is "typical of the work Wyeth produced from costumed models while he was a student of Howard Pyle It relates to a finely wrought charcoal drawing, c. 1902 (NCW 1366) of Pyle's favorite model, John Weller, dressed as a cavalier wearing the same boots and sash, and an oil on canvas painting of a similarly clad pirate carrying a gun, known only by an archival photograph of Wyeth's studio (filed between letters dated June 29 and July 3, 1903, WFA). In late June 1903, Wyeth sent either this painting or the one mentioned above to Needham (NCW to HZW, "Received your welcome letter...," and dated in another hand, June 25, 1903, WFA)".
