Title: New York murder scandal, inter-racial Chinese-Irish marriage Author: Gorham, Henry Place: New York Publisher: Date: March 9, 1859 Description: Autograph Letter Signed (“Henry”). 3pp. Written by a young man working in the New York garment district. A sensation detailed in New York newspapers: Charles Appo, 38 year-old unemployed Chinese interpreter, had a drunken brawl with his wife Catharine Fitzpatrick, an immigrant from Dublin. When she began to scream, the landlord’s wife, accompanied by two other tenants, all Irish women, ran to her aid. Appo pulled out a knife, killed the landlord’s wife, and stabbed the other women. Fitzpatrick, running from the apartment, attacked the hysterical landlord, who, finding his wife’s body, blamed Fitzpatrick for her death. The police arrested her and chased Appo to a Chinese boarding house, where he surrendered, probably happy to escape the “infuriated rabble” of thousands gathered in the street, threatening to lynch him. Convicted of murder, he remained imprisoned on Blackwell’s Island a decade after the Civil War. Lot Amendments Condition: very good Item number: 288737
