NELSON, Horatio, Viscount (1758-1805), British Vice-Admiral . Autograph letter with free frank signature ("Nelson & Bronte") to Edmund Nelson (his father), n.p., [24 October 1801]. 1 page, small 4to , written with his left hand. [With:] Anyas, G. Autograph letter signed to his father, [on board the ship Hercules ], n.d. [1802]; Nelson, Edmund. Autograph letter signed to Anyas, n.p., 27 October 1801. All neatly tipped into : Southey, Robert. The Life of Nelson . London: Bickers and Son, 1887. RESPONDING TO HIS FATHER, NELSON SEEKS A FLEET POST FOR A YOUNG MAN. Writing in the year in which he won the Battle of Copenhagen and while he was living in the home of Sir William and Lady Hamilton, Nelson attempts to aid a young man seeking a naval commission. Reverend Edmund Nelson, rector of Burnham-Thorpe and the admiral's father had received a letter from a Mr. Anyas who sought an appointment for his son. Responding to his father's request, Nelson writes: "I shall be very glad to do whatever you wish me, but till we see what ships will be employ'd in the Peace it is impossible to know who to ask to receive a young man. When I do, I do not know that I may be able to succeed but you may assure Mr. Anyas that I certainly will try." Referring to the proposed peace with France, he notes: "Till the Definitive treaty is signed which may be two or three months, no ship will I fancy be paid off." Nelson's response was forwarded to Anyas by the Reverend, who writes: "from Ld Nelson you will see I have not been unmindfull of your request. I wish it may suceed." Anyas's son eventually joined the Royal Navy and served aboard the ship Hercules . In 1802 he writes to his father that they are about to set sail and requests new clothing "suitable to a warm climate" as he expected to go "on foreign service." Together three pieces .
