NEAR EASTERN NEO-BABYLONIAN CYLINDER SEAL WITH WINGED FIGURE 700-500 BC A carved chalcedony seal with winged figure between winged beasts, accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Cylinder seal of Chalcedony, 33 x 15 mm. In the centre of the scene stands a four-winged god, holding off on either side a rampant winged quadruped. A fish and rhomb serve as fillers.This is a Neo-Assyrian or Neo-Babylonian seal, circa 700-500 BC, in the drilled style. It is a very well done piece, and of large size, but the head of one quadruped is broken off, and much of the other. What is left, including the god, is in very good condition.' 13 grams, 33mm (1 1/4"). Fine condition, chipped. [No Reserve] Provenance From an important collection of Classical and Near Eastern seals formed in the late 1970s and early 1980s; the property of a London gentleman. Footnotes This lot is part of a single collection of cylinder seals which were examined by the late Professor Lambert in the 1980s and many are accompanied by Professor Lambert's own detailed notes; the collection has recently been reviewed by Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. It is accompanied by a museum-quality impression of the seal's design.
