NAUMANN, Johann Andreas (1747-1826). Naturgeschichte der Vögel Mitteleuropas . Gera: Köhler, [1895-] 1897-1905. 12 volumes, 2 o (384 x 282 mm). 439 chromolithographed plates by Fr. Eugen Köhler after J.G. Keulemans, B. Geisler, A. Gring, O. Kleinschmidt, E. de Maes, O. von Riesenthal and others, 10 uncolored lithographed plates, line block and halftone illustrations in the text. (a few volumes with minor spotting to plates). (Minor marginal tears to a few text leaves.) Contemporary half morocco, spines gilt-lettered (some scuffing, a few volumes with chips to spine ends). Provenance : bookplate, small embossed stamp on front free endpaper of each volume, most plates annotated in pencil. Third edition, revised and enlarged, from the two previous editions published in 1795-1817 and 1822-1860, respectively. The text is unaltered with any corrections being made as footnotes and any additions being made in square brackets. The birds had all been redrawn in their natural surroundings, and the plates showing the vari-colored eggs of several species were drawn from the collection of Eugène Rey.
