NARES EXPEDITION – BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY PAPERS. A group of nine papers. London: George Edward Eyre and William Spottiswoode / Harrison & Sons / House of Commons, 1875-1878. The British Parliamentary Papers relating to the George Strong Nares Expedition, a complete run according to Arctic Bibliography plus two papers not recorded in Arctic Bibliography. In 1875-1876, Nares led the two-vessel British Arctic Expedition to the North Pole. Waters proved impassable for Alert and Discovery and an outbreak of scurvy resulted in several deaths, but the expedition collected a great deal of data, gathered here. The “Blue Books,” as the British Parliamentary Papers are known, are considered the most important primary source for Arctic studies. Arctic Bib. 45251- 45257; Navel Cadets and Arctic Expedition (Scurvy) are not in Arctic Bib. Nine papers, in two volumes plus two unbound papers, all folio (approx. 320 x 205mm), comprising: 1. Papers and Correspondence Relating to the Equipment and Fitting out of the Arctic Expedition of 1875, including Report of the Admiralty Arctic Committee . 1875. 40 pp. * Chart to Accompany Papers and Correspondence ... 1875. 2pp. * Naval Cadets . 2 July 1875. 2 pp. * Further Papers and Correspondence in Continuation of Parliamentary Paper [C–1153] of 1875 . 1876. 25 pp. * Journals and Proceedings of the Arctic Expedition, 1875-6 . [1877]. 484 pp. * Report of the Committee Appointed by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, to Enquire into the Causes of Outbreak of Scurvy in the Recent Arctic Expedition . [1877]. 505 pp. 41 plates including maps and tables (a couple detached and laid in). Modern half calf. – 2. Results Derived from the Arctic Expedition, 1875-76 . 1878. 156 pp. 15 plates (some foxing throughout). Original wrappers (rebacked, some soiling, light chipping to extremities). – 3. Supplementary Estimate of Her Majesty’s Navy for the Year 1874-75. 15 February 1875. Bifolium leaf (repairs to extremities, light foxing). – 4. Arctic Expedition (Scurvy) . 7 June 1877.
