Beschreibung:

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE. Letter signed ("Np") to the Duke of Cadore, Saint-Cloud, 20 April 1812. 1 1/4 pages, 4to , in French. The letter to hsi Minister of the Interior and Foreign Affairs, concerning the Emperor's plans to restore the Palais du Louvre for the storage and exhibition of the treasures brought back from his successful campaigns. Construction of some outbuildings had already begun in 1799, but at the time of this letter the main body of the Louvre was still inhabited by squatters, who had built a warren of shanties and partitions in its marble chambers. Napoleon requests that Cadore "draw up a definitive budget of all that the demolition of the Louvre buildings will entail. Baron Labouillerie only attributes 294,000 francs to this purpose in his accounts of 31 March 1812. This sum seems very small to me, given the large number of houses that have been demolished on the Carrousel and on the grounds of the Louvre...Ascertain also the product of the sale of the Rivoli and Cappucines land. Apparently the Rue de Rivoli land is estimated at 3,000,000; but that only 1,600,000 francs have been received; the Capucines land is estimated at 1,700,000 francs but only a million has been received. Send me a statement and take measures to bring in all that remains to be collected...." Provenance : Anonymous owner (sale, Christie's New York, 17 December 1983, lot 509).
