An exquisite maki-e fountain pen depicting two goldfish in a tranquil pond. Vest model, lever filled, 1920s. Black lacquer ground, together with gold, red, green and blue hiramaki-e. The pen is signed under the lever. Neither artist nor pen are referenced in Hutt & Overbury's "Alfred Dunhill: The Art of Lacquer Pens," Murakami's "Dunhill-Namiki and Lacquer Pens" or LarQuemin's "The Four Seasons of Namiki," and this appears to be a most uncommon example. Indeed, this pen's singular design, without the usual ring-top affixed to the gold-filled coronet, seems to be an unrecorded Dunhill-Namiki variant. No examples of this exact style of pen are shown in any of the above-mentioned references. 108 mm. 14K gold nib. Pen shows signs of use, including light wear and small losses to maki-e work, but no significant damage. With box (presumed original).
