An elegant maki-e fountain pen depicting two birds in flight over beautifully delineated Japanese blossoms. Lever filled, 1930s. Black lacquer ground, together with gold, red and green hiramaki-e. The pen is signed by maki-e master artist Syucho Makino (born 1889, died ?), who was awarded prizes for his maki-e work in 1929. See Murakami's "Dunhill-Namiki and Lacquer Pens" (p. 59) and Hutt & Overbury's "Alfred Dunhill: The Art of Lacquer Pens" (p. 153). This particular pen is not referenced in either book, nor in LarQuemin's "The Four Seasons of Namiki," and appears to be unrecorded. 135 mm. 14K gold nib. Pen shows signs of use, including light wear to and small losses maki-e work, but no significant damage. With box (presumed original).
