Originally released in parts in the New Yorker and Atlantic magazines and then in book form as Conclusive Evidence , Nabokov’s memoir went through several iterations before being published here in what he refers to in the introduction as the “final version.” Fellow author John Updike wrote of it: “Nabokov has never written English better than in these reminiscences; never has he written so sweetly.” This copy was annotated by Nabokov, with word counts at the top of each page in the first chapter and notes on nearly twenty pages.
