MUSIC -- Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827). An interesting collection of contemporary programmes, all including works by Beethoven, and letters relating to BEETHOVEN AND HIS CIRCLE, comprising: 5 programmes of the Concerts Spirituels 17 March 1825, 1 March 1827, 15 March 1827 and two further undated programmes; 3 Gesellschafts-Concert programmes, 14 December 1823, 28 November 1824 and an undated programme; programme for Fidelio at the Kärntnertor-Theatre, 3 January 1815; programme for a benefit concert for ANTON SCHINDLER, 7 April 1827; programme for a concert at the Kärntner-Theater including Beethoven's Ouverture in C in manuscript, 17 December 1823; the programme for the benefit concert for the Beethoven memorial in Vienna, signed in pencil by LISZT, 16 March 1877; an autograph poem by Beethoven's friend Brünning, 1 page; ARCHDUKE RUDOLF OF AUSTRIA: Autograph letter signed to a friend, 16 October 1820, concerning movements of the Emperor, 1 page; GIOVANNI MALFATTI: Autograph letter signed Malfatti, homeobiotixer , to a friend, n.p.,n.d.; entry card to BEETHOVEN'S FUNERAL, 29 March 1827; and modern reproduction lithographic portraits of Beethoven and Archduke Rudolf, apparently taken from a book. The programmes for the Concerts Spirituels of 17 March 1825, 1 March 1827 and Moscheles's concert of 17 December 1823 include an overture by Beethoven in C still in manuscript. The work is likely to be the overture to Die Weihe des Hauses , op.124, composed in 1822 and first published in 1825. (Sketches for this overture sold in these rooms on 24 June 1992). The programme of 15 March 1827, twelve days before Beethoven's death, includes a performance of Symphony no.9. The remaining Concerts Spirituels are probably dated 5 and 8 April and include performances of Symphony no.6 and the overture to Egmont . The Gesellschaft-Concerts include performances of Symphony no.2 and the overture of Egmont and of Symphony no.8. The performance of Fidelio is of the third and final version, which was first performed at the Kärntnertor-Theater on 11 April 1814. Although the letters of Archduke Rudolf and Dr Malfatti (Beethoven's doctor and the uncle of Therese Malfatti, whom, in 1810, Beethoven appears to have thought of marrying) are not addressed to the composer, together with the Schindler and Moscheles programmes, they complete an interesting small collection of Beethoven memorabilia.
