MUSIC]. HAYDN, FRANZ JOSEPH, 1732-1809. Autograph manuscript signed ("di Giuseppe Haydn 1780") of the first 2 pages (the opening 19 bars) of a new aria "Dice benessimo chi si marita," composed for performance in Act II, Scene 2, of Antonio Salieri's opera La Scuola de' gelosi , by the character Lumaca, inscribed at the head of first page, "Aria della Scuola de'gelosi nell'Atto 2do." [Esterhza, Austria], 1780. 2 pages, oblong 4to, 208 x 312mm. (8 1/4 x 12 1/4 in.), 19 bars on one system of six staves per page of 10 ruled staves, a tiny chip to one margin, strong vertical crease, but otherwise in very good condition. A HAYDN ARIA FOR A SALIERI OPERA: A PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED MANUSCRIPT The manuscript presents the opening 19 bars of a new aria scored for strings, two horns in E, bass and voice, which Haydn composed for performance in Antonio Salieri's opera La Scuola de' gelosi . (Haydn was on very friendly terms with Salieri, court composer to Franz Joseph.) Salieri's opera was first performed at Eszterhza on 27 July 1780, during the period when Haydn held the post of oberkapellmeister to his music patron Prince Nicholas Esterhzy. Haydn also composed an additional aria for act 1 of the same opera. The present leaf, part of the Byron Reed Collection since about 1890, has long been unknown to musicologists. It constitutes the first of four leaves, now scattered, which comprised Haydn's working manuscript. Page 2, containing bars 20-37, survives in the ____________; page 3 is untraced, and page 4, comprising bars 64-80, is presently in the _______________. See Hoboken, xxiv b 5 and H.C. Robbins Landon, Haydn: Chronicle and Works: Haydn at Esterhza 1766-1790, London, 1978, p. 423.
